Simplicity by Leanne Hembrow
Simplicity - Leanne Hembrow
Malalo Island, Fiji
It’s early morning, I am sitting in the cockpit of our home, a whistling breeze is humming, creating ripples on the sea, the boat gently rides the movement hanging into the wind.
As I sip my lemon green tea, I’m transfixed by the beauty.
I stare at the island fringed with palm trees, hills so still and strong, undulations covered in parts like a moss blanket. There is a village tucked away and life begins to move across the exposed sandy bay at low tide.
They walk slowly through narrow bodies of water, sunshine highlights their figures as they stand at the edge of the sand bar awaiting their boat ride, they transverse the body of water to the adjoining island… daily work begins.
"Simplicity… the quality of being simple and not complicated. My life at times presents challenges, not unlike others, but I have a balance living a simplistic ocean life." - Leanne H Hembrow
For some reason the movie “Pretty Woman” comes to mind, Richard Gere in his corporate suit, shoes and socks off, trousers hitched, standing in Central Park, New York, walking on the grass. I reflect on my past working life… and ponder… I don’t miss jamming my feet into shoes daily.
On the adjoining island they greet holiday makers from all walks of life… customer service, requests, expectations, demands… shoes!
Some live on the adjoining island away from their families. They take an hour for themselves before work…
I traverse across the body of water to the pontoon, yoga bag swung upon my shoulder, I join the smiling faces of my students.
Yoga Class Plantation Malalo Lailai, Fiji
We walk along the sand past the sleepy resort, up the newly carved rugged path to the top of the island to a yoga deck with a 360 degree view of the Mamanuca islands.
A guest has joined us today, and students are excited to share this new yoga experience.
After class they ask, did you like it?
“Their lives seem simple, quiet, peaceful where they have left … woven mats upon the earth below the swaying palms ‘Simplicity’.” - Leanne H Hembrow
“You cannot begin to understand others unless you immerse yourself into their lives, life moves by on the island not unlike any busy city with construction, change, management, but with the ever present relaxed influence of Island time.” - Leanne H Hembrow
My ocean life and island friends are intertwined with peaceful similarities and simplicity!
Namasté, I honour the place in you where the entire universe dwells. We are the same, we are one.
A namasté between two yogis is a pact made to honour the highest, truest, most authentic parts of themselves, and let their limitations fall away.
Namasté, the process of unpacking it can be a spiritual quest of the heart.
It is one thing to conceptually understand this philosophy, but it is another to feel it in your bones.
My hope is to continue introducing yoga into the lives of my Fijian friends.

My first Fijian yogini friends I bonded with introducing yoga at Nanuya Island Resort Blue Lagoon
